Why Protein Is the Only Macro
That Actually Matters
for Fat Loss

And why most women are not eating nearly enough of it — even the ones doing everything else right.

Hi Reader,

If there is one thing I could change about how women approach fat loss — it is this:

They are not eating enough protein. Not even close.

I do not say this to be critical. I say it because I see the same pattern constantly — women who are training consistently, eating carefully, doing everything they have been told to do — and still not getting the results they deserve. And in almost every case, the first thing I look at is protein.

Here is why it matters more than any other food choice you make:

When you are in a caloric deficit without enough protein, your body breaks down muscle for energy — not just fat. Less muscle means a slower metabolism. And a slower metabolism makes every future attempt at fat loss harder.

What Adequate Protein Actually Does

1

Protects your muscle during a caloric deficit

Without enough protein, your body cannibalises muscle alongside fat. Muscle is your metabolic engine — losing it slows everything down permanently.

2

Suppresses your hunger hormone more than anything else

Protein suppresses ghrelin — your hunger hormone — more effectively than carbohydrates or fat. High protein meals keep you fuller for longer, every single time.

3

Burns calories just by being digested

Your body burns 20–30% of protein calories during digestion — the thermic effect of food. No other macronutrient comes close to this. Carbs burn 5–10%. Fat burns 0–3%.

4

Supports your metabolic rate during and after fat loss

The biggest predictor of long-term fat loss maintenance is how much muscle you preserved during the process. Protein is the only thing that makes this possible.

5

Non-negotiable on GLP-1 medication

On Tirzepatide or Ozempic, appetite suppression is so strong that women often under-eat protein significantly. Without it, 25–40% of weight lost can be muscle — not fat. Protein protects against this.

Your Minimum Daily Protein Target
Body weight (kg) × 1.8 = grams per day
On GLP-1 medication: body weight × 2.0 to 2.4g per day
Absolute minimum regardless of body weight: 120g per day

This target must be hit every single day — not averaged across the week.

Simple SA Protein Sources to Hit Your Target

All values are per serving — cooked weight unless stated otherwise

Chicken breast (cooked) 100g 31g
Lean beef mince (cooked) 100g 28g

The One Rule

If you only do one thing right in your nutrition — make it hitting your protein target. Every single day. Not most days. Not on average. Every day. Everything else is secondary to this.
